Major Roadworks On A470 Will Cause Disruption Until February 2025

Major roadworks will cause disruption on the A470 for the remainder of the year, the Welsh Government has confirmed. Drivers have been told to plan ahead.

After speculation, confirmation of the extent of roadworks on a three-mile stretch on the A470 between Talerddig and Dolfach has been confirmed by the Welsh Government. They say there will be a total closure of the road from October 31 until December 20.

The statement says the work will provide a permanent solution on this stretch of road which has had traffic management in place since an emergency closure in October 2023, when a retaining wall which supported the road partially collapsed.

Detailed design work on the permanent solution is now complete and work can begin, it adds. They say that by making the A470 more resilient, a further emergency closure and disruption should be avoided.

Repairs to the retaining wall above the adjacent Afon Laen will mean the stretch of road will be closed 24 hours a day, although the time could be reduced, depending on progress. For the latest politics news in Wales sign up to our newsletter here.

After the closure, two-way traffic lights will be put in place for construction to finish, and they will be removed by February 14, 2025.

The statement adds: “This work is essential in order to ensure the road can remain open in the years to come. We understand this will cause disruption in the short term while the work is underway, and we thank drivers for their patience. It is vital this work is carried out at this time for the future resilience of the road.”
